Nikon F Internal Body Casting Numbers

In the factory two parts of the body casting were marked with a sequential production number. This number is NOT the same as the camera serial number on the top cover. It is a one- to four-digit-number and it restarted at 1 every times when 9,999 was reached. It can only be seen when the right top cover of the camera body (part 20FB1-2003B) has been removed.

Here a few examples of camera serial numbers and the matching internal numbers. The first number is the one stamped on the back side of the body casting, the second number is the one etched on the front plate.

On the rear side the number was stamped with white or yellow paint at the right of the finder release button (remove the right top cover, part 20FB1-2003B).

The very same number was etched with a sharp instrument on the front plate above the bayonet mount (remove the apron, part 20FB1-2002).

Found up to the serial number range of 6424xxx.
